10 Commandments for Kids

thm_arthurelsleysummerfunstbernardandfoxterrier1. You may not love anyone or anything more than you love God.

2. You may not worship or put more importance on any person or thing, other than God.  You must worship only the Lord, not your parents, not a friend, not a movie star of sports hero, not a car of boat or skateboard. Nothing.

3. You may not swear. Use God‘s holy name only in a loving way, never to express anger or frustration.

4. One day of your week should be set aside for rest and the worship of God.  Work six days of the week only.  You need a special day set aside to relax and meet with other Christians.

5. Be respectful to your parents.  Love them, and the Lord will reward you with a long life.

6. You may not hate other people; don’t ever think of hurting someone else in any way.

7. Keep your thoughts and actions pure.  Sex is a gift of God to married couples.

8. You may not take and keep anything that doesn’t belong to you.

9. You may not tell lies, especially when that lie will hurt someone else.

10. You may not be jealous of what others have.  You may not be jealous of your friend’s new toy or clothes or the big house your neighbor lives in.  Be satisfied with what you have.

Twelve Rules For Happiness

a family mealI thought this would be nice for a copywork lesson…or to put on refrigerator.

Happiness is a habit, a by product of right thinking and living.

1. Live a simple life. Be temperate in your habits. Avoid self-seeking and selfishness. Make simplicity the keynote of your daily plans. Simple things are best.

2. Spend less than you earn. It may be difficult, but it pays large dividends in contentment. Keep out of debt. Cultivate frugality, prudence and self -denial. Avoid extravagance.

3. Think constructively. Train yourself to think clearly and accurately. Store your mind with useful thoughts. Stand porter at the door of your mind.

4. Cultivate a yielding disposition. Resist the common tendency to want your own way. See the other’s viewpoint.

5. Be grateful. Begin the day with gratitude for your opportunities. Be glad for the privilege of life and work.

6. Rule your moods. Cultivate a mental attitude of peace and goodwill.

7. Give generously. There is no greater joy in life than to render happiness to others by means of intelligent giving.

8. Work with right motives. The highest purpose of your life should be to grow in spiritual grace and power.

9. Be interested in others. Divert your mind from self-centeredness. In the degree that you give, serve and help, you will experience the by product of happiness.

10. Live in a day tight compartment. That is live one day at a time. Concentrate on your immediate task. Make the most of today.

Homeschool to Harvard-Investing in Your Child’s Future

victorian homeschoolWayne Allyn Root who gave me permission to print this inspiring article, is a Capitalist Evangelist, entrepreneur, and Libertarian-conservative Republican. He is a former Libertarian vice presidential nominee and author of “The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide”. Although the ultimate goal for my precious children is Heaven rather than Harvard, this success story needs to be shared so that parents will realize that they are equipped to educate their children without government interference. ~Anne

The Attorney General of the United States Eric Holder recently stated publicly that banning homeschooling would not be a violation of our fundamental rights. Perhaps he should be considering banning public school teachers unions instead. Did you know that New York City just announced that 80% of their high school graduates could not read near their grade level? They needed “remedial reading” just to enter community college! In my adopted hometown of Las Vegas, newspaper headlines recently reported that over 2/3 of high school sophomores couldn’t pass a basic math exam.

Meanwhile, since 1999 homeschooling has increased by 74% and homeschool students score 72 points above the national average on the SAT. This is not an anomaly.

My new book, “The Ultimate Obama Survival Guide” is about investments anyone can make to survive, thrive and prosper during the next 4 years of Obamageddon. But the most important investment of all is in your children’s future. A quality education will determine their success or failure, as well as their earning power for the rest of their lives. In my opinion, a quality education is therefore the civil rights issue of the 21st century.

The Mystery of Life

prayingman300pxI love this poem by Helen Steiner Rice as it reflects so much of what I feel on some days.  Knowing that the “great giver of life” is holding my hand is such a comfort to me.

We walk in a world that is strange and unknown, and in the midst of the crowd we still feel alone,

We question our purpose, our part and our place in this vast land of mystery suspended in space

We probe and explore and try hard to explain the tumult of thoughts that our minds entertain.

But all of our probings and complex explanations, of man’s inner feelings and fears and frustrations

Still leave us engulfed in the “mystery of life” with all of its struggles and suffering and strife,

Unable to fathom what tomorrow will bring- but there is one truth to which we can cling.

For while life’s a mystery we can’t understand, the “great giver of life” is holding our hand

And safe in His care there is no need for seeing, For “in Him we live and move and have our being.”

Second Sight

mother readingJPGI cannot weave a tapestry, whose vibrant colors gleam,
But I can thread a needle, and sew a little seam.
I have no silver notes to turn into a lovely song,
But I can sit and listen to the tune and hum along.

I cannot preach a sermon, to edify the year,
But I can say a little prayer, the Lord can always hear.
I cannot climb a mountain, all wreathed in clouds of white,
But I can walk a woodland path, and feel my heart grow light.

I cannot paint a masterpiece, I cannot carve in stone,
But there is something I can do, that is my very own.
for though I do not weave or climb, nor paint, or carve, or sing,
Somehow I find a bit of God….in every living thing.

A Homeschool Mom’s Prayer

mother-with-praying-child

A Prayer from my heart as I continue on this homeschool journey.

Precious Lord and Savior I come to you with praise and adoration because you are a good God  full of mercy and forgiveness. You have forgiven all of our sins and remember them no more! You supply all of our needs and pour your blessings upon our family and homeschool. You care about our little world, our home, our everyday ordinary lives even while you know we are but dust. You allow me to come to You with each small question, before each subject that we study…even  Algebra. How awesome you are Lord being the master mathematician. Surely, our family will trust You to help us. Lord I praise You because your strength is made perfect in my weakness…my insecurities…my impatience. I will trust you with our homeschool, our children, our family. I doubt myself  everyday….but I do not doubt You Lord and know that You can be trusted with our lives. You are faithful even when we are not. You are faithful to complete the work You have begun in us even when we fail so much of the time. We will glorify you our King because we know that any measure of success is because of You.

Oh Lord as I navigate through each new season of homeschooling, it sometimes feels as though I’m walking in the darkness especially during these highschool years. Your holy word reminds me that if I commit my works unto you that my thoughts will be established.  Your word reminds me that I can ask in faith for wisdom and you will not deny this but will give it freely.

Why They Won’t Listen

I thought this message by Ken Ham was a good one for believers to take note of.  In the past sharing the gospel was easier in some ways because of a certain consensus that existed in the general population. Most folks believed in God, perhaps even the 10 commandments.  Many had a general knowledge of Christianity. Charles Darwin’s theories were not  a consideration because even non-religious folks believed in a creator.  Sharing today may be somewhat complicated and require more of us in order to be understood by a very lost culture.  What do you think about this message?  ~Anne

Kids Do Not Belong to Their Parents

I used to watch MSNBC once in a while just so I could hear the liberal point of view.  Now, I do not.  My eyes are wide open these days and I understand that progressives will never even listen to an opposing opinion.  They are intolerant and do not believe in free speech at all.  They practice group-think and reject a free exchange of ideas.  Nevertheless I wanted to post what one MSNBC host believes about your children.  These folks are not even attempting to hide their Marxist ideologies anymore.

The Apple Cart

lady with applesI received this short story in my email this morning and thought it was a good one to share or read to our children.  I can easily imagine using  this as a flannel graph story for little ones.

A few years ago a group of salesmen went to a regional sales convention in Chicago . They had assured their wives that they would be home in plenty of time for Friday night’s dinner. In their rush, with tickets and briefcases, one of these salesmen inadvertently kicked over a table which held a display of apples. Apples flew everywhere. Without stopping or looking back, they all managed to reach the plane in time for their nearly-missed boarding.

ALL BUT ONE!!! He paused, took a deep breath, got in touch with his feelings and experienced a twinge of compassion for the girl whose apple stand had been overturned. He told his buddies to go on without him, waved good-bye, told one of them to call his wife when they arrived at their home destination and explain his taking a later flight. Then he returned to the terminal where the apples were all over the terminal floor. He was glad he did. The 16-year-old girl was totally blind! She was softly crying, tears running down her cheeks in frustration, and at the same time helplessly groping for her spilled produce as the crowd swirled about her; no one stopping and no one to care for her plight.

Down From His Glory

Every now and then a song  speaks to my heart so deeply that I feel compelled to share it with others.  This song written by the grandson of William Booth who founded the Salvation Army  makes my heart soar…especially the chorus. In 1921, Booth-Clibborn created this touching hymn. The tune was adapted from that of the Italian song, O Sole Mio, recorded in 1916 by famous  opera star Enrico Caruso. I hope you enjoy this song and worship our wonderful Savior as you listen. Be sure to turn off the website music before you begin.

My Top Curriculum Picks

victorian homeschoolDiscussing the various homeschool programs and curricula available used to be a favorite topic of mine. Pouring over catalogs  while I drink my afternoon tea is still something I enjoy on occasion, however my enthusiasm is somewhat waning these days. There was a season when I believed that a perfect curriculum, producing amazing results in my children, could actually be found in one of those catalogs. Now though after homeschooling for over 10 years,  I’ve come to realize  that just as there is no perfect church,  there is no such thing as a perfect curriculum. Probably any curriculum would produce satisfactory results as long as it is used consistently. The problem comes when we teachers just don’t enjoy using certain programs because they are not as clear as we would like,  or perhaps too teacher intensive.  Some programs have excessive busy work and  we homeschoolers realize more than most  that there are not enough years to cover all we want to teach….so we happily trash the busy work.  With that being said, I do have some favorites that I’d like to share with you. The following programs worked better  for our family.
